Weberplatz in Essen

June 17, 2024

NOTE: Before Pelicad started its journey, our company (cityscaper) focused on communicating complex construction projects more clearly and emotionally appealing. Using Augmented Reality (AR), citizens, investors, and other stakeholders could experience future construction projects live on-site in a 1:1 dimension. Making CAD data available on the cloud paved the way for Pelicads' mission to ease the pain of visual creation in architecture, real estate development, and urban planning.

What you're about to read is one of our case studies from cityscaper.

Redesigning the Weberplatz in Essen

Funded by the E.ON Foundation and in collaboration with the city of Essen, we at cityscaper were accompanying this process. The voice and local expertise of citizens are recorded digitally on-site and have a greater impact by being passed on directly to decision-makers.

The augmented reality solution from cityscaper (now Pelicad) was used for this purpose, which makes it possible to use a cell phone or tablet to make the structural changes visible and at the same time leave notes and comments on the design on a virtual level.

Mission

With the help of our augmented reality solution, citizens have the opportunity to see the structural changes with their cell phones or tablets. Marks can be set and notes, comments or wishes can be left on a virtual level. The collected feedback is then forwarded to planners, who then create designs for the Weberplatz. In addition, cityscaper will offer a visualization of climate data to educate citizens about the current microclimatic situation. We want to design a city and a space that meets the wishes and needs of its citizens and at the same time is forward-looking and climate-friendly.

Event

Feel free to come over. The campaign will take place in cooperation with the city of Essen from March 2nd. until March 17, 2023. On March 2nd, 2023, the city and cityscaper will accompany citizens in a practical workshop as they submit their ideas. Ideas and suggestions for the future design of the square can be submitted both classically with pen and paper and digitally accompanied by cityscapers AR experts. In addition, the city of Essen is hosting an information event and a planning workshop on March 9, 2023 in the Art and Architecture Forum in the northern city center. At the end of the summer, a jury will choose a winner of the competition, taking your input into account, and the planning variants will be presented in an exhibition and presentation.
